Pointは「先端、刺すところ」という意味。名詞では「先」「先端」という意味から「点」、「地点」「得点」「要点」「ポイント」などの様々な意味で用いられる。
動詞では先の尖ったもので「指す」という語感から「指し示す」と訳される。point outの形で前置詞outから「取り出す」という語感が生まれ、「指し示して取り出す」という意味から「～を指摘する」となる。「（物をある方向に）向ける」「（人を～に）向かせる」という意味もあり、方向を表わすtoなどの前置詞とともに用いられる。
