decideは'de(離す)'+'cide(切る)'で「切り離す」。考えられる選択肢を消去することで「ある一つのことに決定する」という意味をもち、そのことから「決定する」「決断する」と訳される。「切り離す」という語感から、「決める」というその時点に着目している。
「決める」という意味ではsettleも似たの意味をもつが、「一定の状態に落ち着く」という語感から「なかなか決まらなかったことが最終的に落ち着く」というニュアンスになる。
resolveは「決心する」「決意する」という意味をもつが、決定に至るまでに形成された意思があり「しっかり心を決める」という意味。determineは「限界を定める」というニュアンスがあり、堅い決心を含んでいる。
