spreadは「平面的に、より広い範囲に広げる、広がる」という意味をもつ。折りたたまれているものや、丸められているものを「広げる」という語感がある。
「より広い範囲に広げる」という意味からインクで紙に色を「塗る」、農薬や肥料を「散布する、撒き散らす」という意味に発展する。また、噂や情報が「広まる」、病気などが「蔓延する」という意味へと広がる。
似た意味をもつ、extendは線的に伸びるニュアンスを含み、expandは平面だけでなく空間へと広がる様子をもっている。また噂や情報を広める、という意味ではbroadcastが同義語である。
