distantは'dis（分離、離れて）'+'stant（立つ）'。具体的に距離がわかる場合「遠い」という意味のほか、時間的に「遠い」、家族や血縁関係などが離れている「遠い（親戚）」として用いられる。非常に遠いが、距離がわからなかったり、漠然としている場合にはfarを用いる。remoteは「人里離れた」という意味である。
