raiseは「他の力で上へあげる」という意味をもち、「上げる」「上昇させる」「起こす」という意味になる。人や動物を「育てる」という意味にも発展する。一方、riseは、「自力で自然と上にあがる」という意味をもつ点で異なり、太陽や温度、煙などが「登る、上がる」という意味で用いられる。
「育てる、栽培する」という意味でraiseは、人や動物を育てるという意味である。growと似ているが、growは植物や髪など自然と生え上がってくるものに限定して使われる。bring upは「育てる」という意味で、人に対して使われる。
