normalは'norm(規格)'+'al(~の)'という意味。「標準の」「正規の」という意味がある。精神的もしくは肉体的に「正常の」という意味で用いられる。後者の意味の反対語として用いられるのが、abnormalで「異常な」という意味となる。ordinaryは「一般的な、平均的な」という意味、regularは「規則的な」という意味で用いられる。
